How to rename and recreate Microsoft Outlook data (.OST) file

Issue:

Email messages, calendar, tasks and other items are saved on a server or your computer, when they’re saved to your computer, they’re saved as Outlook Data Files (.pst or .ost).

Just like any file, there is a possibility that the Outlook Data Files can become corrupted. If you think your data files have been corrupted, we’ll show you how to repair or recreate the files.

FIX:

Rename and recreate a corrupted .OST file

Typically you can fix syncing errors by either renaming or recreating your Outlook Data Files.

Outlook 2010 and 2013

  1. Locate the .ost file.
  2.  Click the File menu | then click Info.
  3. Click Account Settings | click Account Settings again.

  iii. Click the Data Files tab.

  1. Click the data file that is set as the default.
  2.  Click Open Folder….
  3. Rename the .ost file by right clicking on the file and selecting Rename.

  – We suggest rename the file to ost.old.

  1. Press Enter on your keyboard.
  2. Open Outlook. Outlook should start to configure a new data file.

  – This process can take anywhere from 10-60 minutes depending on your mailbox size.

Watch out – While the new data file is being configured make sure you don’t open SFO or close Outlook.

When your mailbox has been rebuilt you’ll see the message, “All folder are up to date” in the lower right hand corner.

Outlook 2007

  1. Locate the .ost file.
  2. From the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
  3. From the “Account Settings” window, click the Data Files tab.

iii. Click the data file labeled as “Default.”

  1. Click Open Folder….
  2. Rename the .ost file by right clicking on the file and selecting Rename.

  – We suggest rename the file to ost.old.

  1. Press Enter on your keyboard.
  2. Open Outlook. Outlook should start to configure a new data file.

  – This process can take anywhere from 10-60 minutes depending on your mailbox size.
